STREET PROTESTS in the New York financial district have led the vigilant
US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to warn about possible hacking
attacks on Wall Street.
According to a post on the Anonops blog, the DHS recently released a bulletin that warns of the potential for attacks as well as the vulnerabilities they likely will hit.
The bulletin, reports the hacktivist collective, warns that it will "continue to exploit vulnerable publicly available web servers, computer networks and other digital information mediums for the foreseeable future".
Although the Wall Street protests were not mentioned directly, the DHS bulletin does talk of "publicized events" that could motivate the group. The Wall Street protests have been running for about three weeks now, and while Anonymous is very much in virtual attendance, nevermind support, so far there have been no technological attacks.
The organisers of Occupy Wall Street are glad to have Anonymous support it, no matter how threatening the DHS thinks the organisation might or might not be. However, in a comment one leader suggested that at times it went too far.
"Anonymous stands in solidarity with us, and they're non violent. They have legitimate grievances -- they have reasons to be upset with the way the internet works," said Occupy Wall Street spokesman Patrick Bruener, "but sometimes the way they put that out there isn't beneficial."
