Facebook Hack: What is the truth

On November 16th, it was reported that around two lakh Facebook accounts of Bangalore users were hacked. Report says that morphed pornographic profile pictures and violent images were posted to user accounts and were sent as feeds to friends and family.

Also, users are getting messages from their friends to click on links, or users sending mass chat messages. It appears to be a usual spam attack, on a much larger scale this time.

Users are scared, thinking that their photos have been transferred to unwanted websites and their data have been compromised.

However, the next day, Facebook gave the following statement on Facebook India’s wall post : “There have been inaccurate reports of Facebook users' accounts being hacked. This is not true. Users photos are not being transferred to an unwanted site and no accounts have been compromised. Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us. We are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms, and take action on those who is responsible for these types of content.”

The question is: Is Facebook doing enough from their side? Do we need to worry about our data and photos published online?

Well even if they aren’t, there’s not much we can do about it. At least we should do our part: use an updated browser, never click on random links, never allow unidentified apps to have access to our data, report spam to whatever looks like a spam, or contains violent or pornographic content.
