You can follow the following measures to make your W-Fi device safe to
and from the outside world:
1. Turn on WPA / WEP Encryption
(Whichever is compatible with your system)
Password protect your Wi-Fi with a
password or Passphrase so that users only who know your password can actually
able to connect. Though your Wi-Fi Spot will be visible to others having
wireless connectivity, still they won’t be able to connect unless they know
your username and password. Setting up WPA/WEP Encryption can be done from the
Modem Router Settings page. Also, pick the strongest encryption which is
applicable to your network.
2. Change the Default SSID (service set
identifier)
SSID Stands for Service Set Identifier.
Changing the default SSID increases your security. Knowing SSID itself doesn’t
help an attacker attack your network directly but it can used as subsidy to
attack your network.
3. Enable MAC Address Filtering
Activate MAC Address Filtering for your
system. It will give you more security as after enabling this feature, only you
can access your Wi-Fi Connectivity and that too when connected with your PC or
Laptop having that specific MAC Address which is entered in the Modem. This
will increase your security as a hacker has to know your MAC Address even if
knows your username and password set.
4. Disable SSID Broadcast
You must have observed “Cellone” viewed
in your cellphone at regular intervals. This is SSID Broadcasting. Stop SSID
Broadcast as knowing or using SSID, an attacker can know whether the hot-spot
is an industry based hot-spot or purely home based W-Fi Router.
5. Do Not Auto-Connect to Open Wi-Fi
Networks
Never connect to any Open Wi-Fi Network
as you don’t know whether it’s a network setup by any hacker or not. Enabling
will auto-connect feature will auto-connect you to the hot-spot. But, it may
thereby pose you risk to the attacker. Also, the open network may be sniffed by
an attacker, and if you enter sensitive information n through connecting to the
open network chances are there that your sensitive data may also be sniffed
thereby compromising your data.
6. Enable Firewalls On Each Computer and
the Router
All the Routers provided by
most of the vendors contain built-in firewall feature. Ensure that your router's
firewall is turned on and working fine and well. Also, consider installing and
running personal
firewall software on each computer
connected to the router.
7. Position the Router Safely
Position your Wi-Fi Router such that it
can’t be accessed from unwanted location. Try to keep the transmission range as
specific as possible. It may help you keep your network invisible from the
hackers.
8. Turn Off the Wi-Fi Router During
Extended Periods of Non-Use
