Government needs an ethical hacker community

As most of the countries' governments are computerizing their services, now the call for an ethical hacker community participation, is of vital importance, says India's Information technology (IT) minister Kapil Sibal.

The third Global Cyber Security Summit will be held in India, in October next year. While speaking at the curtain raiser, Sibal said, "We need a legal framework as we are dealing with one of the best minds. We also need a community of ethical hackers, as the resource pool of them is very limited in the world."

Why is the Ethical Hacker community needed?
Ethical hacker community is a team of security experts that have the organization's permission to hack the network in an attempt to identify its vulnerabilities. If vulnerabilities are discovered, it helps the organization to defend itself against attacks.

Just like in war and sports, Ethical hackers know the tricks that crackers use to exploit systems. In both of them, the security of a system is explored  based on their knowledge and the use of tools, to discover loopholes. This similar nature of hackers and crackers alarms the organizations. It is important to remember that ethical hackers are not crackers and do not usually have a past of criminal hacking.

With crackers, insiders, and the numerous tools available, it is important for an organization and government agencies to make sure their systems are secure. If penetrated, at the minimum there is a temporary disruption of business processes. At the extreme scale, an organization or government agency may have critical situations like (Top 5 U.S. Government Web Sites Hacked in 2011 where millions of private data records leaked.)
