Computer Crime becomes a third threat !

FBI director Robert Mueller spoke about computer crime at the San Francisco Commonwealth club yesterday. He said that there is a need for more cooperation between the FBI, CIA and NSA, even though they are already collaborating on some investigations. Such insight is important, according to him, because forewarned is forearmed, and access to social networking could give FBI investigators warnings about attacks and threats before they are realized. In a way, this means that computer crime comes after terrorism and espionage on the security organizations.

Wikipedia defines Terrorism as those violent acts, which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for a religious, political or ideological goal, and deliberately target or disregard the safety of civilians. However, terrorism has no universally agreed, legally binding, criminal law definition.

Espionage or spying involves an individual obtaining information that is considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information.

Computer crime, refers to any crime that involves a computer and a network. Computers may have been used to facilitate a crime, or it may be the target. Such crimes may threaten a nation’s security and financial health. Issues surrounding this type of crime have become high-profile, particularly those surrounding cracking, copyright infringement, child pornography, and child grooming. There are also privacy issues when confidential information is lost or intercepted, lawfully or otherwise.
